610society Brings You: BRAIDING BASICS

Updated: Dec 9, 2021

Braids are a great way to style your hair. A braid will keep your hair secure while you work out, help extend time between washing, and even protect you from the dreaded winter hat hair! It’s a healthy way to style your hair because it doesn't require heat and doesn't break or damage hair like ponytails and clips do.

So what is a Braid? It's simple. A braid is three strands that are woven together.

610’s HELPFUL HINT: Just think, move the outer most strand inside. Switch sides and

repeat. Move the outer most strand in. Right outside inside, left outside inside, right outside inside, left outside inside. Repeat until there is no hair left.

What is a French Braid? Just like a basic braid, a French Braid consists of three strands, or sections, woven together. But what makes it French? These three strands are constantly getting hair added to them.

610’s HELPFUL HINT: The strand that you’re adding too, drop it! You’ll scoop it back up with the hair you're adding to the section. No need to fuss with holding it. Makes it much easier whether you are braiding someone else’s or your own hair.

What is a Dutch Braid? A Dutch Braid is exactly like a French Braid, but instead of weaving the sections over top of one another, they are woven underneath.

610’s HELPFUL HINT: Having trouble starting a braid? To make it easier, you can secure the first section with a small plastic hair tie. Once the braid is complete, simply cut the plastic hair tie. It’ll be our little secret, no one will ever know!

MORE HELPFUL HINTS FROM 610SOCIETY:

Braiding “dirty” hair is easier. If your hair is freshly washed, you can certainly still braid away, it’s just more challenging because squeaky clean hair is slippery and harder to hold. If you want to extend your time between washes, add some Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo and braid away.
